Measure twice
Note wall width and the clear space above sofas or sideboards. Leave breathing room around the frame.
Check the artwork page for width and height in centimetres and compare to your tape measure.
Viewing distance
Larger works need more space to stand back. In a short corridor, prefer a smaller or vertical piece.
Diptychs and series need the combined width — ask the artist how they recommend hanging them.
Ask before you commit
If you are unsure, write to the artist with a photo of the wall. Many can advise on scale and orientation.
Remember framing can add several centimetres on each side.

- Is there a rule of thumb for sofa walls?
- Many designers leave roughly two-thirds of the sofa width for the artwork width, but comfort and taste matter more than a formula.
